Small, powerful, great shape, perfect for the places a regular drill doesn't fit.AND the price was right
It might be a little heavier. It sells for fraction of the price but seems to work just as well. If it holds up for 3 or 4 years it will be a good find. I bought this close quarter drill to use as a sander for wood turning on the lath. It replaces the Souix close quarter drill I used for several years. I don't think the chuck is very heavy duty but for my purpose it will be fine.
Bought this primarily to use with wire brushes for auto restoration, but had occasion to install an oak threshold with countersink bit - power level is impressive. The jacobs chuck helps to make sure bits are held securely.
There was enough space for the gear to slide back, loosing its grip on the shaft. After re-assembly, it worked fine. It fits like a morse taper. IF it were not for this, I would give it a 4 rating.
Then I used a tight fitting spacer from a home made UHMW washer to keep the gear in place and yet let it be as friction free as possible. I needed a right angle drill diver for tight space for one project so the price was right. Most people cannot or will not do this, and if they can, I don't blame them if they don't. There was no sound or rough feel like a gear stripped, so I decided to take it apart. I knew that any problems would be on me to fix or eat. HOWEVER, I was able to complete seven 1/4" holes in 1 inch wood before it began slipping as though a gear was stripped. What I found was poor design and assembly at one point.Gear #13 is/was pressed onto a slightly tapered spindle shaft. The result was just " gear spin" on the shaft.
There is no need for this to happen even on a tool this inexpensive. I ordered this and had it shipped to me here in Japan by family. (Freshly sharpened drill bit too). With a small press, I pressed gear tight onto the shaft.
It has a hair trigger. I find the variable speed hard to control. I don't know how it would stand up to hard use, but at the price who cares. I needed this drill for a specific job, and it performed very well. I continue to use it occasionally. It would be easier to control the speed if the trigger spring was stronger.
